About Alice James Books and our Awards:
The Alice James Poetry Cooperative currently accepts poetry manuscript submissions through its two annual competitions: the regional Kinereth Gensler Awards (for poets residing in New England, New York state, and New Jersey) and the national Beatrice Hawley Award. AJB welcomes submissions from both emerging as well as established poets.
Winner(s) of the Kinereth Gensler Awards become active cooperative board members of Alice James Books when their manuscripts are selected for publication. These authors agree to a three-year commitment, during which they judge competitions, participate in the editorial and business decisions of the press, and participate in many aspects of their book's production. The process ensures that poets have a great deal of input into the final appearance of their finished books, as well as an integral post-publication role.
The Beatrice Hawley Award was established by the press in 1986. It is a nationally-offered publication award open to poets at any stage of their careers. The winning poet does not become an active cooperative board member, but has his or her book published and receives $2,000.
Alice James Books also partners with Kundiman, a nonprofit organization devoted to the promotion and preservation of Asian American poetry, to publish the winning book of The Kundiman Poetry Prize. For submission guidelines and award details, please visit Kundiman at www.kundiman.org. Currently, Alice James Books does not accept online submissions for this prize through our site. We apologize for any inconvience this may cause.
In addition to these awards, Alice James Books is also accepting inquiries (from September to March only) for the AJB Translation Series, details of which can be found below with the submission guidelines.
Winner(s) for the Kinereth Gensler Awards are announced in December. The winner for the Beatrice Hawley Award is announced in April. Winners of The Kundiman Poetry Prize are announced in June.
Alice James Books continues to welcome submission via regular mail. Guidelines for hard copy submissions can be found at our website, www.alicejamesbooks.org. Please note, manuscript fees paid are not refundable.
